Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church
REIDSVILLE, NC - Nearly 500 meals are expected to be served at the annual Thanksgiving Dinner on November 24, 2011 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Reidsville, NC. St. Thomas has hosted this community-wide event since 1983. The meal, which includes turkey and all the fixings, will be served at the church beginning at 11 a.m. and until 1 p.m. Meals are also delivered and are available for carry out.
“With services such as Meals on Wheels, the Senior Citizen’s Center nutrition site and the soup kitchen closed for the holiday, serving this meal meets a real need in the community,” said event founder William Horsley. “This is a real community effort, using local restaurants, other churches and individual volunteers to cook, serve and deliver a delicious Thanksgiving dinner to people who are alone or hungry.”
The event was begun in 1983 when Horsley and Capt. Ron Dolman of the Salvation Army pooled their resources to provide the meals. “We had no idea what to expect,” said Horsley. “We had it announced on local radio stations and people started calling in, crying, and asking for delivery.” Two members of the church, Tom Balsley and Clark Turner, drove around Reidsville and picked up homeless people and brought them to the church for a hot meal. Meals were also served at the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army’s participation ended in 1985 and since then St. Thomas has sponsored the event.
“Last year we had nearly 100 volunteers, more if you count people who made desserts,” Horsley said. “People came to help carve turkeys, serve, deliver meals, and clean up. Some of these people have been involved for more than twenty years.”
Anyone wanting to volunteer, or needing delivery of a meal, should contact St. Thomas at 349-3511.
